QB Bryant Moniz of Hawaii draft profile for this thursday 2012 NFL draft

April 25, 2012 3 comments

QB Bryant Moniz, Hawaii | Dynasty Draftnik

Positives: Moves well in pocket. Goes through progressions to find secondary receivers. Good speed as runner and is willing to sacrifice body for yards. Competitive and tough — plays hurt.

Negatives: Below-average arm strength. Not very accurate on timing patterns, even on short slant patterns. Can’t read coverage — threw 3 very easy INTs to LBs covering intermediate routes in 2010 bowl game. Doesn’t react well to pressure. Broke leg in 2011 and missed rest of season.

Tony Nguyen – first asian coach of a professional football team

January 11, 2012 Leave a comment

What comes first in sports, a great team or a great coach? Does the coach make the team great or is it the talent of the team that makes the coach great? It is a tough question that has plagued many arguments over the “greatness” of coaches in bars all over the country. The LFL isn’t immune to this question, especially for expansion teams like the Minnesota Valkyrie and head coach Tony Nguyen.

“Coach {Tony’s] coaching style can be described by two simple words: The Basics! He preaches technique and doing things correctly,” said WR Whitney Meierotto, “That way when we get tired or frustrated, our technique is the one thing that we all can fall back on and rely on to carry us through.” At practices and training camp it would echo through the practice dome, “Technique, Technique, Technique!” coach Tony Nguyen would bark. Though Coach Nguyen has a stable of impressive athletes on his team, he isn’t going to let them rest on their athletic ability alone, but rather hone that ability into positional and football related skills to ensure maximum performance.

Wide receivers will need to run crisp routes, tackling must be executed properly, and plays run correctly. “Know the game and know your job. Coach Tony reminds us every day the importance of our positions on the field,” said RB Leekplay Paye. The quarterback on the team is small and athletic pinay Joseline Bandijo, who has been thrust into the starting role to due an injury to the other QB.

It isn’t all technique, Nguyen knows that these are inexperienced players, mistakes will happen. When asked …

Born in Korea - Hines Ward with his mom

Tim Tebow‘s stunning 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime gave Denver the 29-23 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers and in effect ends the season for Hines Ward. Tim Tebow is having an amazing season with seven 4th quarter or overtime comeback victories.

Hines Ward was held without a catch in the Steelers’ Wild Card round loss to the Broncos. The 36-year old Ward has had a sub-par year for the Steelers catching 46 passes for 381 yards in starting just 9 games. In 14 seasons for the Steelers, Ward has six 1,000 yard seasons.

Norm Chow to Hawaii: Long-Time Coordinator Finally Gets His Chance to Shine

December 23, 2011 Leave a comment

In one of the feel good stories of the college football season, long-time offensive coordinator Norm Chow will finally get a shot at a head coaching job with the University of Hawaii.

Chow has been the coordinator at BYU, NC State, USC, UCLA and Utah, as well as spending a brief stint as the Tennessee Titans’ OC, but he is now returning home to his native Hawaii. At 65, he will be the third oldest active head coach in college football.

Chow has helped coach some great quarterbacks including Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Philip Rivers, Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.

The Warriors have had no shortage of quality quarterbacks in recent years with Timmy Chang, Colt Brennan and now Bryant Moniz. While his eligibility is over at the end of this year, it shouldn’t be long before another great quarterback emerges with Chow at the helm,

“I am extremely honored to receive the privilege of leading the University of Hawaii football program; it is very humbling,” he said in a statement. “This is a program with great history, and I feel excited and energized about creating a program that will make all of the people of Hawaii feel pride for the university and our state. I am looking forward to coming home, to family and friends, and I am going to do my best to contribute to the rich history of Hawaii and its progress.”

He is the perfect fit for Hawaii because of his roots there as well as what the team has been known to do with the spread offense. This is a great move for Chow and the university.

Lingerie Football: Jennifer Chu’s Orlando Fantasy crushes Diane Ha’s Cleveland

Orland Fantasy's Jennifer Chu

ORLANDO — The Orlando Fantasy mowed down the Cleveland Crush, 68-8, in the most lopsided contest of the season-to-date as Game MVP Etta Paul (118 ALL-PURPOSE YDS., 4 TD) led an aggressive 34-minute assault that ultimately crushed the visitors’ spirits before a celebratory crowd at the iconic Citrus Bowl.

Jennifer Chu is a WR/CB for the Orlando Fantasy. Diane Ha is a WR/DB for the Cleveland Crush.

Cleveland ends their inaugural season win-less, as did Orlando last season. But with experience and the development of emerging cornerstones on this roster, Crush fans may have reasons to be optimistic for a similar turnaround next season.
Orlando now moves on for a key inter-conference test in January against the Tampa Breeze and can clinch a playoff spot with a win. Currently, Las Vegas (Western Conference) and Philadelphia (Eastern Conference) have clinched playoff berths.

Chris GoCong records 3 tackles in game vs Ravens

December 6, 2011 Leave a comment

Cleveland Browns linebacker Chris GoCong suffered a strained oblique on Sunday in the Browns lost to Baltimore Ravens. He is listed as day-to-day. GoCong has been playing well. He has 43 tackles, 1.5 sacks in 12 games this season.

Chris Gocong has sent thousands of Asian/Pacific American fans to their computers to Google his name— Chris Gocong: Vietnamese? Filipino? Pacific Islander?

Well, no need to speculate any longer, crack Epicanthus researcher Rachel Roh contacted Gocong’s dad to pin down Chris’ ethnic roots. Here’s what he had to say:
“After review with Chris and his mom (Julie), he is the following—100% American, 12.5% French, 12.5% German, 25% American Indian (and) 25% Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and 25% Filipino.” So there you have it. Quite a mix. Gocong calls himself a “mutt”

Going home not so welcoming for Ravens’ Haruki Nakamura

December 5, 2011 Leave a comment

Haruki Nakamura is one of three Ravens players who hail from Ohio. But that doesn’t mean that the free safety, who is a Cleveland native, gets any special treatment when he and the rest of the team visit Cleveland Browns Stadium – as they do Sunday.

“When I got drafted [in the sixth round in 2008], I was getting all sorts of crap from my friends from Cleveland,” Nakamura said with a smile. “I can’t win in Baltimore as far as my family goes. My mom tells me that she’ll cheer for me, but she won’t cheer for the Ravens because she’s a Browns fan. So that’s what I deal with when I go home.”

Peter Nguyen rushes for a team high 79 yards and a touchdown in Montana playoff game win

December 5, 2011 Leave a comment

Montana running back Peter Nguyen had 79 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown during the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs on Saturday.

Two weeks after Montana greased Montana State for 309 yards rushing, the Griz were at it again in a 41-14 playoff win Saturday. They churned out 229 yards, systematically demoralizing the intimidated Bears.

Montana has had other big games on the ground this fall. But something magical is happening the colder it gets.

Nguyen isn’t just finding open spaces, the 5-foot-8 waterbug is busting tackles.

Just ask coach Robin Pflugrad how it helps having all three runningbacks in the mix.

“It’s extremely beneficial because they all bring a different element to our run game,” he said. “Dan Moore is obviously our power back, so to speak. Jordan Canada and Peter Nguyen are similar but yet they do have differences.

“It takes some pressure off Peter Nguyen when Jordan Canada is there. For a couple games it was really just Peter Nguyen. We like to play fast. We played very well in the first half playing fast. If you only have one back in practice you’re not going to be able to play as fast.”

Credit is due to Montana’s imposing offensive line for making Saturday possible. By the same token, Nguyen, Moore and Canada are all running exceptionally hard, something even NFL scatbacks seem reluctant to do on every play.

When you run the ball with success, life is a ray of sunshine. The passing game benefits, the defense stays off the field. The air smells fresher. Food tastes better.

‘All-in’ effort helped Seung Hoon Choi in start

December 4, 2011 Leave a comment

LINCOLN — Nebraska junior guard Seung Hoon Choi hadn’t received much playing time since his two starts in September, but that didn’t alter the way he approached practices.

That’s why Choi was able to play well against Penn State on Saturday, when he started in place of the injured Andrew Rodriguez, offensive line coach John Garrison said.

Garrison liked Choi’s effort Saturday, especially in pass protection, against a defensive line that may have been the best Nebraska has faced so far.

“Every day, he’s been all in,” Garrison said. “And because of that, he was able to step into the situation that he’s in right now and perform, and do the things that need to be done.”

Bryant Moniz will be missed – season ending injury

November 29, 2011 Leave a comment

RENO, NEV. » This wasn’t how it was supposed to end for Bryant Moniz, but it almost seemed inevitable.

With all the injuries depleting his offensive line and receivers, it’s a testament to Moniz’s elusiveness and toughness that he didn’t get badly hurt sooner than Saturday, in UH’s 10th game of the season.

Regardless of what you might think of the University of Hawaii football team and the performance of its senior leader on offense the past few games, his legacy will be as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in UH history, as well as perhaps the most athletic to have played for the Warriors in the run-and-shoot era.

When he left the field with a college career-ending broken leg in the first half of the 42-28 loss to Nevada, coach Greg McMackin said some of the Warriors players “froze” momentarily — and that was no reference to the chilly air at Mackay Stadium.

“It’s pretty tough when you lose your leader right away,” McMackin said.

By Dave Reardon

via Moniz will be missed – Hawaii News – Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Before Moniz season/college career ending injury, Moniz had joined an elite club.
Bryant Moniz became the third University of Hawaii quarterback to pass for at least 10,000 yards in his career. He reached the milestone on a 6-yard pass to Billy Ray Stutzmann in the second quarter. Moniz passed for 227 yards a couple Saturdays ago, giving him 10,146 in his three-year UH career.
Timmy Chang is atop the program’s career passing yardage list with 17,072, and was No. 1 nationally until Saturday, when he was passed by Case Keenum of Houston.
Colt Brennan is second all-time in Hawaii passing yards with 14,193.

Eugene Amano becomes first asian to catch a pass in NFL

November 29, 2011 Leave a comment

Amano makes reception look easy. Titans center Eugene Amano made the first reception of his career against the Buccaneers, as he snatched a batted Matt Hasselbeck pass out of mid-air and rumbled for seven yards to the Tampa Bay 45.

“It was great,” Hasselbeck said. “When a ball gets tipped, it’s anybody’s ball. Usually you get unlucky and a defender catches it. When it got tipped, my stomach kind of sank, and when Eugene caught it, I was cheering him on. I was his biggest fan.”

Tackle Mike Otto might have been even more excited about the grab.

“It was unbelievable,” Otto said. “I look up and I see Eugene catch it in stride and go downfield … That’s unbelievable. Eugene even looked semi-athletic and that’s impressive.”

How Montana Steamrolled Montana State 36-10

November 21, 2011 Leave a comment

How about those Montana running backs?  The Grizzlies rushed for an impressive 309 yards today, as Peter Nguyen and Dan Moore were giving the Bobcats fits all day.  Peter Nguyen had 19 carries for 123 yards, and Dan Moore had 15 carries for 116 yards.  Another outstanding stat for the Grizzly offense today?  Zero turnovers.

I was really impressed by Nguyen’s open field running ability, and Moore running over Bobcat defenders consistently.  If these two keep on playing like this, the Grizzlies should have a great chance to make it to the FCS National Championship game for the eighth time in school history.

Peter Nguyen put up career numbers in Grizzlies victory

November 19, 2011 Leave a comment

Peter Nguyen rushed for a career-best 149 yards to spark a University of Montana offense that lost quarterback Jordan Johnson to a first-quarter elbow injury.

Backup QB Kemp hit Sam Gratton (7 catches, 85 yards) and Sambrano with passes, but it was Nguyen - playing while injured backs Dan Moore, Beau Donaldson and Jordan Canada looked on – who sparked things with runs of 9 and 14 yards.

“I was really excited,” said the junior running back. “It’s different not having Jordan or Dan, or Beau. I was looking forward to it, and it was great to play more.”

Nguyen picked up 6 more yards when Pflugrad eschewed another field goal attempt and went for it on fourth-and-1 from Western’s 7.

The Griz scored on the next play to go up 22-7, but the TD came from freshman Brett Kirschner. Nguyen had been dazed by a big hit on the sideline.

“He just hit me in a good spot, on my side,” he said.

The Griz are thankful for a bye week ahead of the 111th Brawl of the Wild.

“The time is here to start preparing,” said Pflugrad. “First and foremost we have to get healthy. As Peter said, a lot of his buddies in the running back stable are sidelined, and that’s a group that needs to heal up.

“Because when Peter went down on that sideline it was like, ‘Peter, you can’t go down.’ That was our whole mentality: ‘That’s not acceptable.’ “

The atmosphere will slowly build for the Griz over the next two weeks, ahead of what will be the Big Sky’s title game against the No. 2 Bobcats.

“It’s probably the biggest game of the season for us,” Nguyen said. “We have a couple extra days to prepare for them, and we’re just going to come ready.”

Timmy Chang’s all-time leading passer record

Timmy Chang breaks Ty Detmer’s record

When quarterback Timmy Chang finished his college career at the University of Hawaii in 2004 he held the record for most passing yards in a career with 17,072.

Just last week, University of Houston quarterback Case Keenum broke Chang’s passing record. Keenum is in his sixth year in college after redshirting last year due to an injury in the 3rd game of the season.

After college Chang had stints in the NFL, NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League. In the NFL, Chang played mostly for the Philadephia Eagles.
